the vivid vida
a day in the life of valerie

Rise and grind, New York City. We have lots to do today! First thing I do in the morning is wake up to my multiple alarms, that are set in five-minute intervals, and give myself time to stretch and think about what I have to do for the day.

And of course, I gotta give my phone and social media a quick check to see if there are any special announcements (like a canceled class) or funny tweets to start my morning with.

I try my best not to skip breakfast even if it means spending a dollar or two at breakfast street carts on the way to class. Today, I’m cutting up some something small and easy: strawberries and bananas. I try to eat and work at the same time for efficiency. One of my side hustles that I work on throughout the school year is being Historian for New York University’s International Filipino Association: my home away from home. I’m in charge of taking photos and editing a vlog for the club, which is hosted by different members each episode.

IFA is a student-organized club made to celebrate Filipino culture and community through our various events and meetings. This club is family to me and has allowed me to practice my talent while making some of my closest friends.

Film is my ex side hustle and now my main hustle, a hobby in high school and now turned into a major in college. This morning, I’m reading homework for my winter class called Directing the Actor, where we work with actual actors in a rehearsal to develop our analytical and communication skills as a director.

Next, we head to the gym for a quick one-hour session. I don’t go to the gym everyday, and if school gets hectic, sometimes I don’t even go at all. But if I do have time, I try to go because it’s a quick way to de-stress and help your body out.

Afterwards, I go for a short shower and get ready for class. Today’s outfit includes: a flannel and tights from Uniqlo, a skirt from Bershka, a belt from WEGO, socks from a stand in Ktown LA, and shoes from MUJI.

First stop is the library to print out my paper and cut out some props for my scene today.
